A compact economy vehicle is ideal for weaving in and out of busy city centre traffic. Just make sure it has air-conditioning. If there’s 3-4 people along for the ride, a larger saloon may offer more comfort on journeys in the heat. Many people plan on driving to the desert from Tunis. In built-up cities like Tunis, the speed limit is normally 50km/h (30mph). On the outskirts, it’s 90km/h (56mph) and on main roads and motorways a limit of 110km/h (70mph) applies. It’s common to see police at the entrance and exits to motorways as well as at tolls. Be sure to have your license and other relevant documents at hand.

The Medina of Tunis is a car-free zone, so you’ll have to look for parking in the surrounding area and head in by foot. The car park at Rue Mokhtar Attia is a great spot only a 15min walk away. Otherwise, there are plenty of on-street parking meters that are valid up to 2h and cost very little.
